North, South, East, or West? Best Indoor Plants for Each Window

North, South, East, or West? Best Indoor Plants for Each Window

So you want to know what are the best indoor plants for each window direction? The answer is pretty simple: Let the sun be your compass.

Today’s Plant Care blog might seem a bit simplistic to plant experts, but it could be useful to beginners and new plant parents. Caring for indoor plants is not exactly easy, especially if you lack knowledge of the basic needs of indoor plants, specifically sunlight. Choosing where to place your indoor plant is crucial as different areas of your home get different types of sunlight. This sunlight will determine your indoor plant’s growth. How to determine the best indoor plants for each window direction?

There are two ways to determine which direction your windows face: you can use a compass or let the sun be your compass. Hold your compass horizontally and turn it until the needle points to N (north). If you don’t have a compass, you can observe where the sun rises. Keep in mind that the sun rises in the east. Additionally, this method will only work on a clear day. Now that you learned which direction your windows are facing, what are the different levels of sunlight for each window direction and what are the best indoor plants for each window?

North Window

A north window receives good sunlight, such as medium to low light, during summer. Sometimes, there will be a bit of direct sunlight early in the morning and at the end of the day. However, sunlight intensity drops considerably and only low light indoor plants can thrive during winter. You have to move your indoor plants to a brighter spot from November through March. The best indoor plants for a north window are Golden PothosSnake Plant, and ZZ Plant.

East Window

An east window is the best spot for indoor plants because it receives full sunlight in the morning and good light for the rest of the day. Also, your indoor plants won’t have to suffer the intense heat that usually happens in the south and west windows during summer. The best indoor plants for an east window are African VioletFiddle Leaf Fig, and Monstera.

West Window

Similar to an east window, indoor plants receive the same sunlight, except at the opposite time of day. West window has good sunlight in the morning and at noon and full sunlight in the afternoon. Be careful when placing your indoor plants in a west window since the sun is hotter in the afternoon during summer. Draw a sheer curtain between your indoor plants and the window to protect your indoor plants during summer. The best indoor plants for a west window are Dumb CaneJade Plant, and Parlor Palm.

South Window

A south window is ideal for plants that prefer full sun since the sunlight is really intense. Although sun-loving indoor plants will thrive in a south window, you need to move them back from the heat during summer to avoid leaf burn. You can also draw a sheer curtain between your indoor plants and the window to protect your indoor plants from the blazing sun. The best indoor plants for a south window are Aloe Vera, String of Pearls, and Sweet Basil.
