We are here to save your sanity (and, of course, money) with our list of houseplants you should never buy!
Ever since the pandemic started, many of us have been going a little (or maybe a LOT) plant crazy to create a Pinterest-worthy indoor jungle. It’s not wrong to get lured in by those attractive leaves and exotic blooms. Also, the main reason is it’s on sale. How can you say no if you see a fantastic houseplant that’s both beautiful and budget-friendly, right? Well, we totally understand, but according to experts, there are houseplants you should never buy, like ever.

Boston Fern
One of the houseplants you should never buy is the Boston Fern because it needs tons of humidity to thrive. If you do not provide them with enough humidity, they will dry out and eventually die. Sure, you can try placing them in your bathroom or kitchen, but according to experts, that never really 100% works.
Braided Sansevieria
Have you heard of the Braided Sansevieria? It’s related to the Snake Plant. Yes, it looks extremely beautiful, but according to experts, the Braided Sansevieria does not continue to grow in that braided manner. In the end, new growth will grow naturally straight and spiky.
Carnivorous Plants
One of the houseplants you should never buy is the Venus Flytrap or any carnivorous plants because their needs are not similar to an ordinary houseplant. Carnivorous plants require distilled water and sufficient humidity. Also, you can’t feed them flies or raw meat.
Fiddle Leaf Fig
Beautiful yet notoriously finicky. The Fiddle Leaf Fig doesn’t like to be moved around, so choose a spot with lots of bright, indirect sunlight. Plus, they also don’t like to be exposed to drafts. In other words, the Fiddle Leaf Fig doesn’t like a lot of things, but they require extra TLC, or else they will slowly die.
Maidenhair Fern
Similar to the Boston Fern, Maidenhair Fern is attractive, but almost impossible to keep alive because it requires very high humidity like in a jungle. No, seriously. So save your sanity and skip this plant.
Majesty Palm
Majesty Palm also requires very high humidity. It’s one of the houseplants you should never buy if you are a beginner with no proper knowledge about watering plants because it needs to be watered a lot. However, it’s prone to root rot if it’s not in a pot with proper drainage. Sounds quite complicated, huh?
Single Hoya Kerrii
Cute to look at, but the Single Hoya Kerrii will most likely never grow anymore because most of the time, the leaf isn’t propagated with a stem and node, so it will remain a single, lonely heart forever.
Succulents
Are you surprised that succulents made it to the list of houseplants you should never buy? Everyone thinks succulents are easy to care for, but they need six to eight hours of direct southern light to thrive. We actually don’t recommend this to beginners because succulents are very sensitive to overwatering.
Not all houseplants will actually make a great addition to your home because of their needs. We strongly advise you to research first before buying a new houseplant for your home.
